Not a Bird Shall Fall

I happened upon a dying Nighthawk the other day. He perched on the pavement of a parking lot as if it were his nest, with one wing bent at an unnatural angle to his body. It looked like he was elbowing someone. Flecks of brown, black, and white in his feathers colored him a gorgeous specimen. Not a true hawk, Nighthawks feed on the wing living off of insects. While he may nest on the ground, he will not feed there. They favor dusk and dawn for feeding, circling in the thermals, sending their screech into the wind, leaving those …
